Japan could potentially build from its Mu class SLVs that use solid fuel rockets for all stages. They come in various size configurations, some quite large, and due to being entirely solid fueled, can be turned mobile or naval. The Federation of American Scientists theorizes that, in an ICBM configuration, Japanese ballistic missiles can be as advanced as or superior to the Peacekeeper MX or Minuteman III ICBMs, the mainstay of US nuclear deterrence. M-V and J-1¥'s potentials as BMs would require only a fraction of their heavy-lift SLV capabilities.<br>
If converted to ballistic missile applications, the M-V would seem likely to give Japan an ICBM roughly equivalent to the MX Peacekeeper, and the J-1 would probably give Japan an ICBM surpassing the performance of a Minuteman III.
